Organic Baobab Powder

The Friday Review - PandaVita Organic Baobab Powder
Boost your energy levels with the sweet, citrusy flavor of organic baobab powder!

The Baobab Tree

Sounds like something out of the Jungle Book!  While it is not native to India the Baobab is found throughout Africa.  This beautiful tree is often the subject of pictures as it is seen as the “defining icon of African bushland”.  Baobab is a very large, usually hollow trunked tree that offers a water source, shelter, fiber, dye and crafting materials!  The fruit is harvested as it falls after 6 months of growth.  Once fully matured the fruit is a powdery, fibrous texture that is pulverized and sifted before use.

Nutrition

The baobab has much to offer in terms of natural nutrient content.  Vitamin C, Potassium, Calcium and magnesium are the micronutrients of interest.  I have to admit, I love any natural source of calcium that does not involve animals; and this is a great source!  The synergistic activity of vitamin C ensures optimal absorption of calcium within the digestive system.

Fiber

Healthy gut flora is a huge fad with everyone telling us we need more bifidus!  Taking such probiotics does no good without a food source for those healthy gut bacteria.  This is where baobab comes in!  As a prebiotic this fruit will help you maintain a healthy digestive tract; keeping things moving at peak performance.  The fruit is a velvety soft, fibrous, dry pulp, which doesn’t sound very appealing; but is great news for the digestive system.  The soluble fiber content comes in around 5 grams per serving; higher than that of psyllium!

How to Use

Straight out of the package and into a glass of water is a perfectly fine way to enjoy baobab…. Let’s be honest though it’s way more fun to play with our food!  Over the last week we have tried out a few different recipes.  Here are my fav 3:

The Straight Up

A tall glass of water, some baobab powder, a squeeze of lemon or orange and a dash of nutmeg.  Quick, easy, cool and refreshing!

Orange, Ginger Kicker

1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice, juice of ½ lemon, ginger shot, baobab powder and 1 oz organic dark black cherry nectar.

Juice enough oranges and ½ lemon to fill a glass ¾ full.  Mix in baobab powder and one ginger shot or juice from a 1-2 inch piece of fresh ginger.  Pour the shot of cherry nectar straight down the middle of the glass to produce a cool looking effect.  Spicy and sweet this is a real pick me up!

Orange Cardamom Power Bites

If you don’t already know it… I am a complete citrus freak.  Love all things citrusy!  So of course the main flavor in these little bits of heaven is orange.  Bonus: The kids love these little nutrient rich bites packed full of flavor.  For full recipe click here.
