Importance of Inverted Asana

The act of moving your heart above your head is an inverted pose.  Yoga involves many of these positions throughout a session because they allow for improved lymphatic drainage, focus restoration, and stress relief.  Increased lymphatic circulation is important for the health of your body as the lymphatic system does not have its own pump.  Lymph is circulated solely dependent on the movement of our bodies.  By going upside-down, old lymph is circulated, allowing room for a fresh exchange of fluids in the lower limbs.  One cause of oedema (swelling in the legs & feet) is stagnant lymph, therefore the inverted poses will decrease pain and swelling!

A very simple pose for beginners is “legs up the wall”.  This pose reduces swelling in the lower limbs and is a great introductory to more complicated asana.  Try it before bed to improve circulation, relieve stress and get a better night’s sleep!

Try it now:

Roll or fold a towel or blanket, place near a wall.  To come into the pose sit to one side of the blanket and swing your legs up the wall.  Place arms in “cactus” position, bring your attention to your breath and rest here for 5 to 15 minutes.
