Dietary Supplements!

What supplements do I need to take?

This question has been on the lips of many over the past couple weeks as we head into flu season. I do not like to say that anyone “needs” to take any one particular supplement on a regular basis. Each one has its place, benefits and down falls. The need changes with the seasons; as weather, availability of fresh foods and amount of time spent out doors fluctuates.

I believe that for some people supplements are extremely necessary. It is important to ensure that people are taking what they are lacking in order to save money and not overburden the system.

I encourage my clients to keep a food journal along with a “feelings” journal for 2 to 4 weeks before we discuss supplements. Everyone is familiar with the food journal but not many use what I call a “feelings” journal. This involves recording emotions and physical feelings (such as stomach upset, indigestion, aches and pains, fatigue, excitability, etc) 1 hour before and 2 hours after meals with the food journal.

Combining these 2 journals we get a better overall picture of how the nutrients people ingest are being assimilated within the body. It points to areas that are both deficient or in excess. A food diary alone may not show a B complex deficiency but a lack of energy or feelings of unease at particular times of the day may. Another important result of keeping a “feelings” journal with your food journal is discovering disorders.

To find out more on how journalling can help you discover what supplements you need and what you don’t contact Dr. Jenn today!
