Breathing Therapy

Chronic stress is the number one cause of premature death in North America.

The body reacts to stress by using a fight or flight breathing style meant to help the body prep for large muscle use.  This type of breathing can be become chronic when we experience high levels of stress daily.

The stress breath throws body pH off balance, causes neck and shoulders tension/pain, leads to headaches, insomnia, poor digestion and much more.

Yogic breathing therapy targets the parasympathetic nervous system aiming to release the body/mind from the stress response.  Teaching the mind proper breathing techniques helps us manage stress more effectively and reduces the amount of time our bodies spend in fight or flight mode which ultimately leads to full body/mind healing.

Physical Therapy

Body Alignment: Low back pain from sitting hunched over the computer all day? Joint stiffness from repetitive movement?  Yoga therapy looks to correct alignment imbalances caused by daily life.  These imbalances can lead to chronic pain, muscle fatigue and even injury.  Yoga therapy considers how you live your daily life then aims to strengthen and lengthen muscles that may be contributing to bodily misalignment.

Injury Recovery: Yoga therapy is much like physiotherapy with many of the exercises the same.  The difference is found in translation, yoga therapy assess the entire body.  Looking at how the body compensates for the injury plus why the injury occurred in the first place then aims to treat the entire person not just the injury.

Chronic Pain: When pain becomes chronic yoga therapy refers to psychosomatic investigation to learn the root cause.  Counselling, breath-work, meditation, nutrition combine with static and dynamic postures to facilitate healing, lengthen and strengthen the body while calming the nervous system and supporting mental healing.

Mental Therapy

Psychosomatic refers to the physical manifestation of mental anguish, internal conflict and chronic stress. Yoga therapy uses a combination of breathing techniques, mindful meditation and physical postures to release and come to terms with mental anguish.

Stress Management: Every one of us experiences stress in a different way.  By utilizing the many branches of yoga therapy we can create an anxiety management program as unique as every individual.  The most beneficial forms of anxiety management use a combination of techniques from meditation, mindfulness, breath and exercise.

MBSR: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is an 8 week program developed by John Kabat Zinn that utilizes intensive mindfulness training to assist people living with chronic stress, anxiety, depression, pain and more.

Group Yoga Therapy Class

Breath, Asana, Meditation

These three parts of yoga therapy often overlap in practice.  Meditation requires some form of altered breathing technique, while physical manipulations require some form of concentration.

Every session is unique and targeted to the individual.  Before beginning a therapeutic yoga session I work with you to determine the best course of action based on your current health/injury and your goals.

A full health history is taken, physical testing is performed then appropriate therapies are discussed.
